7 Ways to Get Rid of Dark Spots

Posted on October 16, 2026October 16, 2026

So, you’ve tried vitamin C, azelaic acid, 10% niacinamide, tumeric mask and all those expensive treatments you can’t pronounce.

But those pesky dark spots are still sitting there, stubbornly scattered all over your face.

My sister, I can imagine your frustration.

You’re not alone in this, I promise.

Those dark spots are called hyperpigmentation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

And they are one of the biggest skin concerns we women have to deal with.

But not for long though, because now there’s an approach that actually works when it’s done consistently and correctly.

Even science proves it.

This guide will give you the exact routine you need to fade those dark spots for good.

First of all, what causes dark spots?

Dark spots happen when your skin produces excess melanin when triggered.

The triggers could be:

– Acne or breakouts

– Sun exposure (even on cloudy days)

– Eczema, rashes, or skin injuries

– Hormonal changes

– Picking or squeezing the skin

However, people with medium to deep skin tones with more dark marks because their melanin response is stronger.

So, once you’ve spotted some dark marks on your face, the next goal is to stop more dark spots from forming while making your skin heal the ones already on your face.

Evidence-based Products That Fade Dark Spots

1. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

If this is the most important thing you take from this article, it is ‘wear sunscreen.’

Wear that sunscreen, sis.

See, sun exposure triggers and further darkens those patches on your face.

And sunscreen acts as a defence against this.

If you avoid wearing sunscreen, almost nothing I will recommend will work well for you.

2. Use Niacinamide between 4–10%

This reduces the transfer of melanin to skin cells and supports the skin barrier.

3. Get Vitamin C (especially L-ascorbic acid or stable derivatives)

This ingredient Inhibits the enzyme that produces melanin and provides antioxidant protection.

4. Try Azelaic acid between 10–20%

If you want to calm down inflammation and fade post-acne marks, this should be your bestie. It’s suitable for most skin types.

5. Alpha arbutin

This is a gentle melanin inhibitor that works well for sensitive skin.

6. Retinoids

This can come as retinol, retinal, or prescription tretinoin. It speeds up cell turnover so pigmented cells shed faster.

7. Gentle chemical exfoliants

You need to get rid of the surface level dark spots, and exfoliation helps with that.

The options are lactic acid, mandelic acid, or low-strength glycolic acid.

You only need to choose the ones that suit your skin type.

The most effective approach usually combines daily sunscreen with one or two of the above actives used consistently.

How Long Does It Really Take?

Here’s what you can generally expect with a solid routine:

  1. 2–4 weeks

Your skin may look slightly brighter. You’ll see some improvement in surface dullness.

  1. 4–8 weeks

You’ll see your dark spots fading more clearly.

  1. 8–12 weeks

The changes are too obvious to ignore. Most of your dark spots would be gone by now.

  1. 3–6 months or longer

Stubborn or deeper spots, melasma, or marks on deeper skin tones will start to even out.

However, your results depend on consistency, how often you wear sunscreen, the depth of the pigmentation, and your skin type.

The Full Dark Spots Routine

Morning Routine

1. Gentle, non-stripping cleanser

2. Vitamin C serum (wait 1–2 minutes)

3. Niacinamide serum (or a product that combines both)

4. Moisturizer suited to your skin type

5. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher (apply generously and reapply if you’re outside)

Night Routine

1. Gentle cleanser (double cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup)

2. Treatment step: choose one primary active:

   – Azelaic acid or alpha arbutin (good starting point for most people)

   – Retinoid (introduce slowly, 2–3 nights per week at first)

3. Moisturizer or barrier-repair cream

How to introduce actives safely

Start with one new product at a time. Use it every other night for the first 1–2 weeks. If your skin stays calm, increase frequency.

Routine Adjustments by Skin Type

  1. Sensitive skin

Focus on niacinamide, alpha arbutin, and azelaic acid. Avoid strong retinoids and high-strength acids at the beginning. Prioritize barrier repair.

  1. Oily or acne-prone skin

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic textures. Azelaic acid is often especially helpful because it also targets breakouts.

  1. Dry skin

Use richer moisturizers and consider buffering retinoids (applying moisturizer first). Avoid over-exfoliating.

  1. Melanin-rich / dark skin tones

Daily sunscreen is critical. Pair niacinamide or azelaic acid with consistent sun protection. Avoid harsh exfoliants or spot-picking, as both increase the risk of new dark marks.

Getting rid of dark spots is less about finding a miracle product.

You need to use the right combination of ingredients consistently while protecting your skin from further damage.

So start simple, stay consistent, and give the routine enough time to work.
