7 Signs You’re a Side Chick

Posted on September 9, 2026September 9, 2026

There is something particularly humbling about realizing you might not be the main character in a relationship you thought you were building.

You thought you were dating a man. You thought things were progressing. Maybe he tells you he likes you, checks on you, takes you out sometimes and makes you feel like there is something real between you.

But then there are the little things that don’t quite add up.

He disappears every weekend. You have never been to his house. You barely know anyone in his life. His phone is practically a classified document, and somehow, you only seem to see him when it is convenient for him.

At first, you explain it away because, honestly, nobody wants to believe they are someone’s side chick.

But if you keep asking yourself, “How do you know you’re the side chick?” or “How can I tell if I’m the side chick?” you probably need to pay attention to the pattern rather than one isolated incident.

Here are some signs that might tell you what is really going on.

1. He Is Only Available When It Is Convenient for Him

One of the easiest ways to tell if you’re the side chick is to look at when he actually makes time for you.

Does he only call late at night? Does he suddenly become available when everyone else is busy? Are your dates mostly spontaneous because he rarely plans anything ahead of time?

There is nothing wrong with someone being busy. Adults have jobs, families, responsibilities and lives outside of their relationships. The problem is when you are consistently the person who gets whatever time is left over.

You might notice that he can never see you on certain days, especially weekends. He may have a million excuses for why he cannot spend an entire day with you, but somehow he always has time to see you for a few hours when it suits him.

And this is where you need to be honest with yourself.

If a man genuinely wants to build something with you, his life may be busy, but you should still be able to see where you fit into it. You shouldn’t constantly feel like you are waiting for your turn.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that he is busy. It is that you are only available when his actual relationship isn’t demanding his attention.

2. You Know Almost Nothing About His Real Life

You can know a surprising amount about someone without actually being part of their life.

You know his favorite food. You know what annoys him. You know the stories he tells about work. You know what kind of music he likes and probably know exactly how he takes his coffee.

But do you know his friends?

Have you met anyone important to him?

Do you know where he actually lives?

Have you ever been invited into his everyday life, or do you only exist in the little bubble he created for the two of you?

This is one of the biggest things to pay attention to when figuring out how to tell if you’re the side chick.

A man doesn’t necessarily have to introduce you to his entire family after two dates. Obviously, there is a difference between a new relationship and a serious one.

But if you have been seeing someone for months and you still know practically nothing about his real life, that’s different.

You shouldn’t have to piece together his life like you’re solving a crime.

If you are only allowed access to the parts of his life that he chooses to show you, there may be a reason for that.

3. He Disappears at Certain Times

This one is interesting because you may not notice it immediately.

At first, you simply think he is busy.

Then you start noticing a pattern.

He is available during the week but strangely difficult to reach on weekends. He disappears during evenings. Certain holidays are completely off-limits. You cannot call him whenever you want because there always seems to be a time when he becomes unavailable.

And whenever you ask about it, there is an explanation.

Maybe he is tired. Maybe he has family responsibilities. Maybe he fell asleep. Maybe his phone died.

Once or twice? Fine.

Every week?

Now we have a pattern.

This is especially concerning when his availability seems to depend on whether another person is around. If he is affectionate and responsive when he knows he is alone but suddenly becomes distant or unreachable whenever he is likely to be with someone else, don’t ignore that.

People can have private lives. They can have responsibilities you know nothing about. But if someone’s schedule repeatedly makes you feel like there is another woman somewhere in the picture, you should at least be willing to ask yourself why.

Your goal isn’t to become a detective. Your goal is to stop pretending you don’t see what you see.

4. He Is Weirdly Protective of His Phone

Everyone is entitled to privacy.

Let me say that before somebody starts throwing tomatoes.

You do not automatically have the right to go through someone’s phone simply because you are dating them. Privacy and secrecy are not the same thing.

But there is a difference between having a private phone and acting like the FBI is coming for you every time your partner gets close to it.

If he constantly turns his phone face down, takes it everywhere, suddenly changes his passwords or becomes nervous whenever notifications appear around you, you might want to pay attention.

Especially if his behavior changed after you became closer.

Maybe he used to leave his phone beside you without thinking about it. Now he carries it everywhere, even when he is going to the bathroom for two minutes.

Maybe he used to answer calls normally. Now he walks outside before answering.

Maybe he receives messages and immediately hides the screen.

None of these things automatically prove that you are the side chick. People can become more private for different reasons.

But when secrecy around his phone comes alongside other signs on this list, it becomes harder to dismiss.

One strange behavior is not evidence. A consistent pattern of strange behavior is worth investigating.

5. He Avoids Defining the Relationship

This is where things can get particularly frustrating.

You have been seeing each other for a while. You behave like a couple. You talk regularly. You spend time together. You are emotionally invested.

So naturally, you want to know what this actually is.

But whenever you bring up the conversation, suddenly he needs more time.

He says he doesn’t like labels.

He says, “Why do we have to rush?”

He tells you he wants to take things slowly.

And listen, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking things slowly.

The problem is when “slow” becomes a permanent address.

If someone wants the benefits of a relationship but refuses to acknowledge what the relationship is, you need to ask yourself why.

And sometimes, the answer isn’t complicated.

Maybe he genuinely isn’t ready for a relationship. Maybe he doesn’t know what he wants. Or maybe he already has a relationship and doesn’t want you asking too many questions about where you fit.

This is why you should pay attention to actions instead of getting trapped in the potential of what the relationship could become.

You shouldn’t have to convince someone to make space for you.

6. You Can Only See Him in Private

There is a difference between enjoying privacy and being hidden.

Maybe you mostly hang out at your place. Or his place, if you have actually been allowed to see it. You order food, watch movies, have sex and spend time together, but somehow the relationship never seems to exist outside those four walls.

You don’t go to restaurants together.

You don’t attend events together.

You don’t run into his friends.

You don’t make normal couple plans.

You cannot casually post a picture together because apparently that would cause World War III.

Again, one private date doesn’t mean anything. Some people genuinely prefer low-key relationships.

But if your entire relationship has to happen behind closed doors, ask yourself why.

A man who is genuinely available to you should eventually be able to exist with you in the real world.

You shouldn’t feel like you are someone’s secret every time you leave the house together.

And if the only version of your relationship that exists is the version nobody else can see, there is a good chance you are being kept hidden for a reason.

7. Your Gut Keeps Telling You Something Is Wrong

Sometimes you already know.

You just don’t want to know.

You keep finding yourself asking questions like, “Why does he behave like this?” or “Why can’t I meet his friends?” or “Why does he disappear every weekend?”

Then you come up with an explanation that makes you feel better.

Maybe he’s just busy.

Maybe I’m overthinking.

Maybe he has commitment issues.

Maybe I should just be patient.

And honestly, sometimes you might be overthinking. Your intuition isn’t automatically correct just because you feel uneasy.

But there is a difference between anxiety based on nothing and discomfort based on repeated behavior.

If the same things keep bothering you, don’t silence yourself simply because you don’t like the possible answer.

Look at the whole picture.

Does he make you feel secure or confused?

Does his behavior match what he says?

Do you feel like you are building a relationship with him, or are you constantly trying to figure out whether you actually have one?

Because sometimes the biggest sign that you’re the side chick isn’t one dramatic discovery.

It’s the fact that you have spent months trying to make sense of a relationship that should not be this confusing.
