8 Signs He’s Keeping You as an Option (Not a Priority)

Posted on August 6, 2026August 6, 2026

There’s a particular kind of confusion that comes from liking someone who gives you just enough to keep you hopeful, but never enough to make you feel secure.

One day he’s calling you on his way home from work, asking how your meeting went and making you laugh until your cheeks hurt. The next day, he disappears without warning, only to reappear three days later with a casual, “Hey, stranger,” as though nothing happened.

You tell yourself not to overthink it.

Maybe he’s busy.

Maybe he’s stressed.

Maybe his phone really did die.

After all, nobody is perfect.

So you give him the benefit of the doubt. Then another one. Then another.

Months later, you realise you’ve become an expert at explaining away behaviour that keeps hurting you.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether you’re asking for too much or whether he’s simply not that interested, this article is for you.

Because there’s a difference between someone who’s genuinely getting to know you and someone who’s keeping you close enough that they don’t lose you, but far enough that they don’t have to choose you.

And trust me, those two things are not the same.

He Only Shows Up When It Suits Him

One of the clearest signs you’re an option is that the relationship seems to operate entirely around his schedule.

When he has free time, he remembers you.

When he’s lonely, he calls.

When he’s bored, suddenly you’re getting good morning texts again.

But the moment life becomes exciting, busy or inconvenient, you quietly disappear from his priorities.

Now, let’s be fair. Everyone gets busy. Healthy relationships don’t require people to be glued to their phones twenty-four hours a day.

The issue isn’t that he has a full life.

The issue is that you only seem to exist in the gaps of it.

Someone who sees you as a priority may not always have unlimited time, but they’ll make room for you because you’re important to them.

Someone who’s keeping you as an option usually gives you whatever time is left over.

There’s a world of difference.

He Wants Access to You Without Taking Responsibility for You

Can I ask you something?

Have you noticed how some people want all the benefits of having you in their life without accepting any of the responsibility that comes with it?

He wants your attention.

Your encouragement.

Your loyalty.

He enjoys talking to you after a difficult day and expects you to celebrate his wins as though you’re already part of his future.

But the moment the conversation shifts towards commitment, exclusivity or defining the relationship, he suddenly becomes uncomfortable.

It’s almost as though he wants the emotional security of having someone without making the emotional investment of choosing them.

Healthy relationships don’t work like that.

As intimacy grows, responsibility should grow too.

When one keeps increasing while the other stays exactly where it is, the relationship becomes painfully one-sided.

You Never Really Know Where You Stand

This is one of the biggest differences between healthy relationships and situationships.

Healthy relationships may have questions.

Situationships make you question yourself.

Think about how often you’ve found yourself analysing simple things.

“Why hasn’t he replied?”

“Did I say something wrong?”

“Why was he affectionate yesterday but distant today?”

“Does he actually like me?”

When someone genuinely wants to build a relationship with you, they don’t leave you solving emotional puzzles every week.

You shouldn’t need detective skills to understand how someone feels about you.

Of course, no relationship offers perfect certainty all the time.

But there should be an underlying sense of security that allows you to relax instead of constantly trying to decode mixed signals.

Peace is one of the healthiest green flags in dating.

Don’t underestimate it.

He Keeps Promising “One Day”

One day we’ll travel together.

One day we’ll make things official.

One day I’ll introduce you to everyone.

One day things will calm down.

One day.

One day.

One day.

Have you noticed how “one day” can quietly become another way of saying “not today”?

There’s nothing wrong with talking about the future.

In fact, healthy couples do it all the time.

The difference is that healthy relationships gradually move towards those conversations becoming reality.

If every promise keeps living in the future while nothing changes in the present, it’s worth asking whether those promises are building hope or simply buying more time.

Words are easy.

Movement is harder.

Pay attention to which one you’re receiving.

You’re Hidden From the Important Parts of His Life

Not every relationship needs to become public after a few weeks.

Let’s not be unrealistic.

But if you’ve been seeing someone for a long time and you’re still a complete stranger to the people closest to him, it’s okay to wonder why.

Have you met his friends?

Does his family know you exist?

Has he naturally included you in the life he’s building?

Or does it feel as though the relationship only exists in private?

Sometimes there are perfectly reasonable explanations.

Other times, secrecy is simply another form of hesitation.

Someone who’s serious about building a future with you usually finds ways to gradually let you become part of that future.

You shouldn’t feel like a beautiful secret that never gets to step into the light.

He Becomes Vague Whenever You Ask Honest Questions

Have you noticed how some conversations never seem to go anywhere?

You ask where the relationship is heading.

He tells you to enjoy the moment.

You ask whether you’re exclusive.

He says labels don’t matter.

You ask what he wants in the future.

He laughs and changes the subject.

At first, those responses might sound relaxed or carefree.

After hearing them for the tenth time, they begin to sound like something else.

Avoidance.

A mature man doesn’t have to know every detail of his future.

But he should be able to have an honest conversation about the direction he’s moving in.

If someone consistently avoids clarity, don’t ignore what that avoidance is communicating.

Silence is often an answer too.

He Expects Your Loyalty While Keeping His Freedom

This one deserves a serious conversation.

Does he expect you to behave like you’re in an exclusive relationship while refusing to make the relationship exclusive?

Maybe he gets jealous when other men show interest in you.

Maybe he wants to know where you are.

Maybe he becomes upset if you don’t reply quickly.

Yet somehow, when the conversation turns to commitment, he reminds you that you’re “not officially together.”

That isn’t balance.

That’s convenience.

Healthy relationships don’t ask one person to carry the weight of commitment while the other enjoys the freedom of uncertainty.

Love should never operate on double standards.

You Keep Hoping the Next Month Will Be Different

Perhaps the biggest sign of all isn’t even something he’s doing.

It’s something you’ve started doing.

You’re constantly waiting.

Waiting for him to be ready.

Waiting for the timing to improve.

Waiting for him to finally have the conversation.

Waiting for the relationship to become what it has been promising to become for months.

Hope is beautiful.

But hope should inspire action, not replace it.

If the relationship has stayed exactly the same despite all your waiting, it may be time to ask yourself a difficult question.

Are you waiting because the relationship is genuinely moving forward?

Or because letting go feels harder than holding on?

Only you can answer that.

But be honest with yourself.

Your future depends on it.

If reading this article made you recognise your own relationship, please don’t rush to blame yourself.

Many intelligent, kind and emotionally mature women have found themselves in exactly the same position.

Not because they weren’t enough.

Not because they loved too deeply.

But because hope has a way of making uncertainty feel temporary, even when it’s quietly becoming permanent.

The good news is that recognising the pattern is often the beginning of changing it.

You don’t have to keep accepting breadcrumbs because you’re afraid of asking for the whole loaf.

You don’t have to settle for someone who only remembers your value when they’re lonely, bored or afraid of losing you.

Healthy love doesn’t keep you on standby while it decides whether you’re worth choosing.

It chooses.

Not perfectly.

Not instantly.

But intentionally.

And before you close this page, let me leave you with one thought.

Never become so afraid of losing someone’s attention that you accept never having their commitment.

The right relationship won’t make you compete for a place you’ve already been given.

My sister, you were never created to be somebody’s backup plan.

You deserve to be the choice they make with confidence, not the option they keep in case nothing better comes along.
