9 Ways to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others On Social Media

Posted on July 17, 2026September 18, 2026

Let me tell you something. There will always be someone who looks like they are having a better life than you.

And it feels that way because you keep comparing yourself with them.

You can’t be blamed anyway because social media has given us too much access into the lives of many people.

And if you’re not careful, you’ll downplay your efforts and question your worth.

That’s why it’s easier to watch other people rather than be your own main character.

So, Why Do I Feel Behind in Life?

You didn’t wake up feeling worthless overnight. That feeling crept up on you after hours of scrolling.

You felt perfectly content with your life until you see someone your age doing something you haven’t done yet.

Now suddenly you’re questioning everything.

And it’s not like anything about your life changed in those few seconds.

Only your perspective did.

And that’s the downside; comparison doesn’t just show you someone else’s life, but convinces you that yours isn’t enough.

Feeling behind doesn’t mean your failing. Here’s a few steps on how to quit comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.

How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

 1. Spot the Triggers

I noticed I felt depressed after scrolling through YouTube.

Seeing my mates doing so well filled me with both happiness and a strange contempt for my life.

My little wins now felt too small compared to the flex they seemed to have.

When I noticed this was a pattern, I adjusted my feed and stay off YouTube for a while. Now that I’m back, I made sure to subscribe to pages which made me fulfilled and inspired me to grow.

Something is fueling the comparison.

It could be Linkedin. Seeing those ‘’I’m happy to announce” posts sometimes have a way of making you question your career choices.

Or is it those family gatherings where someone always asks,

“So…what are you doing now?”

Pay attention to the moments that leave you questioning yourself.

You can’t change a pattern you refuse to notice.

2. Stop Thinking You Know Their Story

Success looks simple from the outside.

It rarely is.

That woman celebrating her promotion may have spent years being overlooked.

That couple posting honeymoon pictures may have survived seasons nobody knows about.

That business owner making money today may have spent months wondering if they should quit.

People rarely come online to share their struggles, and even when they do, it never captures the depth of what they went through.

So before you look down on yourself, remember you’re looking at someone’s chapter not the entire book.

3. Measure Yourself Against Yesterday

I know you’ve heard this a billion times, but your biggest competition is your yesterday self.

Are you kinder than you were last year?

Do you feel more confident?

More emotionally healthy?

Better at saying no?

More intentional with your money?

The real comparison should be between your yesterday’s version and today’s version.

The real win is gunning for a better version of you.

Growth isn’t always visible.

Sometimes the biggest victory is becoming someone who no longer accepts what once broke them.

4. Curate What You Consume

I was listening to a podcast and the female guest said she has trained her algorithm to give her contents around her interests.

In this content era, we undermine the impact of every piece of content we come across.

See eh, not everything deserves unlimited access to your mind.

If certain accounts leave you feeling small every single time you visit them, unfollow them.

It’s not about hate, you’re simply protecting your most productive organ which is your mind

5. Celebrate People Without Competing With Them

You don’t need to hate someone’s success.

That’s witchcraft.

You can celebrate someone without undermining your own.

Someone else’s blessing is not evident that yours has been cancelled.

If anything, it’s proof you can do the same if you follow their blueprint.

If there’s anyone you admire, study them, look for their patterns and emulate what aligns with your path.

There’s a lot you can learn from others when you choose to get inspired instead of compete.

6. Define Success Before Someone Else Does

When we hear about success, what comes to mind is money, fame or power.

Please, who gave us this narrative?

No wonder our systems are broken.

I’m not saying those things don’t matter, but making them the end instead of the means to an end is why dysfunctionality thrives.

You see a rich parent who is never present for the kids.

The famous celebrity who’s drowning in alcohol and drugs.

Then there’s those who have power but use it to bully or threaten people they were meant to protect.

That being said, we have been sold different narratives on what we should pursue.

That’s why many of us are chasing goals we feel are socially acceptable.

You think deeply about it.Do you really want that lifestyle, that career, or that relationship?

Or have you simply seen it so many times that you assumed you should want it too?

Sit with that question.

It might change your life.

7. Focus on the Next Right Step

You’ve invested time minding other people’s business and the ROI is underwhelming.

Nourn your attention into your own life. Become obsessed with improving yourself.

Know that growth will ask you to climb one step.

That’s all.

Send one application.

Spend one minute doing the workout.

Read one chapter.

Start one thing, anything, today.

You can build a life others can admire to. Just tune that attention more on yourself.

Will you?

8. Give Yourself Permission to Be a Work in Progress

One of the most liberating things I’ve ever heard is everyone is figuring things out.

Yeah some people are more certain but nobody is 100% sure of what they’re doing. They simply mask it better.

You’re allowed to change careers.

You’re allow to start over, end those unhealthy relationships, or move back home.

You’re allowed to be human.

9. Stop Saying You Are Behind

Words matter. Way more than you can imagine.

Every time you say, “I’m behind.”

Your brain hears, “I’m failing.”

And our brain doesn’t know which one is truth or lies. It believes anything you tell it.

So replace your conversation.

Tell yourself you’re still building, learning and growing.

Speak life into your life.

You don’t have to believe it but like water over a rock, your brain will adjust and your reality will catch up soon.

The person you’re jealous of probably envies someone else.

And you’re not behind anybody, you’re simply on your timeline.

For now, focus on building a life that lets you sleep peacefully at night.

That’s success.
