6 Reasons Why Situationships Hurt So Much (Even When You Were Never “Official”)

Posted on August 6, 2026August 6, 2026

One of the hardest breakups you’ll ever go through might be the one you can’t even properly explain.

Someone asks, “So what happened between you two?”

You pause.

Because how do you explain the ending of something that never officially began?

“We weren’t really dating.”

“We were just… talking.”

“It was complicated.”

The words never seem big enough to describe what your heart is carrying.

That’s one of the cruellest things about situationships.

When they end, people expect you to move on quickly because, technically, there wasn’t a relationship. There are no anniversary photos to archive. No couple selfies to delete. No dramatic Facebook status to change.

But your heart doesn’t care about technicalities.

Your heart remembers the phone calls.

The good morning texts.

The dreams you quietly started building.

The plans you never admitted you were making.

And suddenly you’re grieving someone you were never officially allowed to call yours.

If you’ve ever felt embarrassed by how much a situationship hurt, I want you to know something.

You’re not overreacting.

You’re grieving something real.

Not because there was a title.

Because there was an attachment.

And losing attachment always hurts.

You Didn’t Just Lose a Person. You Lost the Future You Imagined

Can I tell you something I’ve noticed?

When relationships end, we’re rarely grieving only what happened.

We’re grieving what we thought was going to happen.

You weren’t just excited about the man.

You were excited about the possibility.

Maybe you imagined introducing him to your family.

Maybe you pictured spending Christmas together.

Maybe you’d already started wondering what your children would look like.

You never said those thoughts out loud because it felt too soon.

But they were there.

Quietly growing in the background.

So when the situationship ends, it’s not only the present that disappears.

The future you’ve been emotionally investing in disappears too.

And that’s an incredibly painful thing to let go of.

Sometimes we’re not crying over what we had.

We’re crying over what we hoped it would become.

Those are two different losses.

There Was Never Any Real Closure

One of the reasons situationships hurt so deeply is because they often end without a proper ending.

Nobody sits down and says,

“I don’t think this relationship is working anymore.”

Instead…

The messages become less frequent.

Plans keep getting cancelled.

Replies become shorter.

You notice the distance before anyone mentions it.

Eventually, one day you realise you haven’t spoken properly in weeks.

That’s it.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

Just silence.

Human beings aren’t very good at processing unfinished stories.

We naturally want answers.

We want reasons.

We want to understand what changed.

When those answers never come, our minds start creating them.

“Maybe I wasn’t enough.”

“Maybe I asked for too much.”

“Maybe if I’d been more patient…”

Before long, you’ve become the detective, the lawyer and the judge in your own heartbreak, trying to solve a case where half the evidence is missing.

That’s exhausting.

You Were Doing Relationship Things

Can we be honest?

One of the reasons situationships hurt so much is because, for all practical purposes, many of them feel like relationships.

You talked every day.

You celebrated birthdays together.

He was the first person you called when something exciting happened.

You prayed for him before interviews.

He checked whether you’d arrived home safely.

People around you probably assumed you were together.

Honestly, even the woman selling snacks outside your office might have thought, “Those two are definitely dating.”

So when someone says,

“But you weren’t even official.”

It almost feels dismissive.

Because your heart wasn’t responding to a label.

It was responding to shared experiences.

Love doesn’t always wait for a title before it begins attaching itself.

That’s why the pain feels real.

Because the connection was real.

The Hope Lasted Longer Than the Relationship

Here’s something that makes situationships particularly painful.

Hope rarely leaves when the relationship does.

Even after you’ve stopped talking, part of you still wonders.

“Maybe he’ll come back.”

“Maybe he just needs space.”

“Maybe he’ll realise what we had.”

Hope keeps reopening a door that reality is quietly trying to close.

And because there was never a clear ending, it becomes incredibly difficult to know when to stop waiting.

I’ve seen women spend months trying to move on while secretly hoping their phone will light up with one message.

Not because they’re foolish.

Because hope is stubborn.

It doesn’t disappear overnight.

But healing usually begins when we stop asking what could happen and start accepting what is happening.

You Keep Wondering Whether It Was Ever Real

This question can haunt you for a long time.

“Did he ever actually like me?”

“Was any of it genuine?”

My sister, let me gently take some of that burden off your shoulders.

Just because someone didn’t commit doesn’t automatically mean every smile was fake.

It doesn’t mean every conversation was a lie.

People can genuinely enjoy your company and still not be willing to build a future with you.

That’s painful.

But it’s different from pretending.

The relationship may have been real.

The feelings may have been real.

The problem was that the commitment never became real too.

Understanding that difference can help you stop rewriting every memory as though none of it mattered.

Some moments were beautiful.

They simply weren’t enough to build the relationship you wanted.

You Blame Yourself More Than You Should

Heartbreak has a funny way of turning us into our own harshest critics.

You replay every conversation.

Every text message.

Every date.

You wonder whether you were too available.

Too emotional.

Too patient.

Not patient enough.

You analyse tiny details that probably had nothing to do with the outcome.

Can I lovingly remind you of something?

Not every relationship ends because someone failed.

Sometimes two people simply wanted different things.

Sometimes one person wasn’t ready.

Sometimes timing really does matter.

Please don’t turn someone else’s inability to choose commitment into evidence that you’re difficult to love.

Those are two completely different stories.

Healing Starts When You Stop Waiting for Different Answers

I know it’s tempting to believe one more conversation would fix everything.

One more explanation.

One more apology.

One more chance.

Sometimes closure comes that way.

Often it doesn’t.

At some point, healing asks us to accept that the answers we have may be all the answers we’re ever going to receive.

That’s difficult.

But it’s also freeing.

Because your life no longer depends on someone else deciding to explain themselves.

You can begin rebuilding your peace today instead of waiting for permission tomorrow.

If your situationship ended recently, I’m genuinely sorry.

Not because I think every situationship deserves another chance.

But because I know how lonely that kind of heartbreak can feel.

It’s difficult grieving something other people don’t fully understand.

It’s difficult explaining why someone who was “never really your boyfriend” still occupies so much space in your heart.

But your healing doesn’t need other people’s approval.

It only needs your honesty.

Be honest about what you’re grieving.

Be honest about what you lost.

Be honest about what you hoped for.

Then, little by little, give yourself permission to let go of the future that never arrived so your hands are free to receive the one that eventually will.

And before you close this page, let me leave you with this.

The fact that a situationship hurt doesn’t mean you loved the wrong way.

It simply means you loved with hope.

Next time, don’t love less.

Just make sure your hope is being met with intention.

Because love can survive difficult seasons.

It struggles to survive permanent uncertainty.

And my sister, your heart deserves something stronger than “maybe.”

It deserves someone who’s certain they want to build a life with you.
